This is one of the yoga nidrā practices included in the Treasury of Transcripts in ‘Nidrā Shakti: The Power of Rest – An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Yoga Nidrā’.
This little nine-minute rhythmic lullaby nidrā practice was created during a nine-night retreat in April 2021 (Navarātri). It demonstrates both a direct connection to the ancient roots of nyāsa in yoga nidrā, and the possibility of contemporary creative approaches to yoga nidrā practice. It can be shared in nine minutes if each line follows without pause. More leisurely presentations can take up to thirteen minutes, including spacious pauses between the sections.
It is based directly and respectfully on one of the oldest written forms of nyāsa appearing in a sixth century South Asian prayer called the Kavacam – The Armour of the Goddess. The journey of attention in this yoga nidrā transcript closely maps the route of the ‘armour’ of protective blessings in the Kavacam. The natural flow of awareness from the head down to the toes has proved so adaptable and effective that a version of this transcript became one of the central practices of naturally arising self-guided yoga nidrā in Yoga Nidrā Made Easy (Dinsmore-Tuli and Tuli 2022). This transcript indicates the original source of the itinerary for the journey of awareness around the body; numbers at the side of the verses refer to the sloka (verses) in the Sanskrit text (Devī Mahātmyam).
